Isaac Week 6 - "Lines For People After the Party" by Alex Dimitrov
In this poem, Dimitrov talks about what happens after a party. He speaks about the lines of cabs that wait for people and how he felt being poor at a party. He describes the details of the party and how he changes into this new person for the party.
Ultimately, though, Dimitrov expresses his disagreement with society in this poem. He says that people "hide all week then [go] some place...[to] empty the dark in." This is very unhealthy for people because it means that people hide everything about themselves and on the weekend or whenever the party is, they just empty all of their darkness at the party and become their worst self. It is basically living life for the next party, where the party is like a drug that a person is addicted to because that is where they want to empty out all of their darkness onto.
I agree with this message that living for the next party is not healthy and can be very bad for a person. It might be fine to go to a party once in a while, but if a person goes to a party all the time and for the purpose of emptying their darkness than I do not think it is healthy. I also do not think that a person should store up all of their darkness like it is something waiting to be released. People should just express themselves how they fear instead of storing up a ton of negative emotion.
Do you agree with this message by Dimitrov? What other opinions do you get from this poem?

Hey Isaac!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you that locking up our emotions and storing darkness within is not smart or good for mental health. I do not think one should unleash their worst self in certain settings versus others. This is why I believe wearing a Kippah and having a mezuzah on every door is so important because these are symbols to remind us that G-d is everywhere we go so therefore we should always seek to act like a mensch. Finally, I agree that going to a party every so often is fine, but shaping your life to live from one to the next is not good for you.
Hi Isaac,
ReplyDeleteI do agree with the message of this poem as well. This culture is not healthy and can become pretty toxic. Obviously, having a good time is definitely nice but not in bad situations as were described.
Hey Isaac. While I agree with some parts of this poem and your analysis, I ultimately disagree with the overarching theme of Dimitrov's poem. I believe that going out and partying and enjoying the physical pleasures of life are an integral part of someone's life. Keeping the body active, especially with activities that actively bring you joy and happiness, has been proven to be one of the most important parts of a healthy mental health. I think that partying and going out with friends allows us to release stress and enjoy life.
