Ellie Week 7: Senioritis Hits Hard

At this point in the year, many seniors are facing the worst virus of all: Senioritis. Many students have already submitted some, most, or all of their college applications and feel they lack motivation for high school. I must admit this has been affecting me as well. I’ve only applied to 2 schools, my safeties, and still, feel so unmotivated to do any work for school. I wonder why this happens to so many people since this is the “grind time” and these grades are the ones colleges will look at. My problem is I know this information already, but still find it exceedingly difficult to find the will to do all this work, especially since I’ve been feeling a heavy work load around this time. For me personally, college applications weren’t crazy difficult. I’m a good writer naturally and it’s always come easy to me. I just sort of wrote what I thought would be right, got it checked over, and submitted it. Not only that, my dad’s a good writer too and always wanted to check over my supplements to make sure they fit his standard. I find it more difficult to get myself to do easy assignments for school than challenging college applications. It’s honestly just hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. This isn’t even the worst part yet. I have to wait to see if I got accepted and then making the decision of where to go is the hardest part, because honestly, I have no idea where I really see myself ending up next year. I’m trying not to focus TOO hard on school and academics and trying to just live in the moment and enjoy this last year while I have it, which may not be great for my grades, but awesome for my mental health. Are you experiencing senioritis? How do you deal with it? If you have any tips or motivational speeches, please share.

  1. Hey Ellie!

I think we are all definitely experiencing senioritis to some extent, some students more than others. I definitely feel that I am being affected by this as well. I think knowing that you are already into college makes you not motivated to continue to get the best grades possible because they don’t really matter unless you begin failing some classes. In terms of motivation for you, I have none and I am seeking some from others too. Please help whoever can! lol

  2. Hi Ellie, I agree that senioritis is a real struggle. Most of the time school feels like camp. One thing I like about senior year is that there is not as much pressure to get perfect scores in every class, since most of the teachers know that we have senioritis. This is good because now it is much easier to learn for the sake of learning, and to focus on parts of the material that I actually enjoy. I don't think there's a cure (I even looked it up), but I do hope that research grants go towards this area as I think it is a huge problem in our society.

  3. Hi Ellie, I've definitely been experiencing some senioritis too! I've been warned of this virus since I was a freshman but just assumed I'd be immune to it (which I wish was the case). I think the main reason for this is college. Trying to organize writing a bunch of college essays along with completing many school assignments has been overwhelming. And not only that, but I agree that constantly thinking and stressing about college decisions and where we're going to be next year has been preoccupying a lot of time. I would love some tips as well. The only advice I could come up with is watching other organized people work. That sometimes motivates me to try to be like them.

  4. Hi Ellie. I think the problem with senior year is that we are basically done with school and are about to transition to a whole new world, and don't know how to prepare for it. We also don't need to focus as much on school because grades don't matter as much for colleges. I also don't think that senioritis is a terrible thing in moderation because it's fine to behave differently because it is your senior year and last year of what was normal for your whole life.

  5. Hi Ellie! I am suffering from a severe case of Senioritis. I honestly don't even know why, but I just can't find any motivation to do my work or care as much as I usually do about school. For subjects I do not particularly enjoy, I find myself taking shortcuts and finding the easy way out to assignments. I also find myself constantly procrastinating homework or projects. I just can't seem to get myself out of this slump even though I have always been such an academically focused person. I used to thrive on academic validation(lol), but now I don't really seem to care as much. I also feel like i don't like the most of the classes I'm taking. For example, history was always one of my favorite subjects, but I don't like gov this year because it just isn't the same type of class.
