Romy Week 6 “Miracles of Morning” by Amanda Gorman
The poem “Miracles from Morning” was written when Covid-19 first started spreading worldwide. It explains how our response to the global pandemic united us, and how we must use this tragedy to move forward. Unfortunately, her message is still relevant today, with the pandemic still spreading. Gorman’s poem gives an optimistic perspective of a crisis being an opportunity to be grateful and help others.
I thought I’d awaken to a world in mourning.
Heavy clouds crowding, a society storming.
But there’s something different on this golden morning.
Something magical in the sunlight, wide and warming.
In this stanza, Amanda Gorman uses opposing imagery to contrast what she expected versus what she experienced. It starts off with gloomy and depressing diction, yet the end is the complete opposite: optimistic and almost perfect. Her selection of descriptive language creates two polar opposite realities; although the pandemic is tragic, people were still able to find positivity in each day.
For it’s our grief that gives us our gratitude,
Shows us how to find hope, if we ever lose it.
So ensure that this ache wasn’t endured in vain:
Do not ignore the pain. Give it purpose. Use it.
In this stanza, Amanda Gorman uses diverse sentence structure to convey her message powerfully. She commands the reader using action verbs in the last line, which creates a sense of purpose and helps the reader feel uplifted during a time of mourning and tragedy. The message in this stanza is vital to our society because it is so easy to get lost in negativity. Having the ability to find purpose in difficult times allows people to be grateful for what they have and use past experiences to improve. After reading this poem, I hope we all can find something positive that we gained from the pandemic. Personally, I have become more grateful for the quality time I get to spend with family and friends as well as simple things like being able to see someone smile as you pass them in the street. What is something positive you gained from the pandemic?

Hi Romy. Personally I feel I needed the pandemic and all that time alone to really grow up and become the person I am today. I was very immature before we went into quarantine and really am now grateful for my time during Covid to mature. I love this poem because it turns a negative experience into a positive one and finds the good throughout all the bad. I've found Amanda Gorman does this with many of her poems and turns many issues in our current world into what we can do about them and fix these issues, instead of dwelling on how bad these problems are.
ReplyDeleteHi Romy, I thought this was a great poem and analysis! I agree that it's important to try to be optimistic and look at the positive sides of things when possible. If it weren't for the pandemic, I definitely would not be the same person I am now. While it may have been frustrating to not be able to see people as easily, I feel that the time spent alone helped me grow tremendously. I found that my confidence grew and that I was able to have more time to explore my interests and learn more about myself. I appreciate Amanda Gorman's vibrant writing and admire how impactful she is able to make her words.
ReplyDeleteHi Romy. Although the pandemic has been pretty annoying, one of the positive things that I have found is that I have been able to see that I actually have a lot of free time in my day and can use it to do more productive things like learning outside of school.
