Lauren- Week 7- Weather Change

    
Over the past week, there has been an amazing drop in temperature in Florida! This small change of weather has definitely been noted. This change in weather has definitely been a nice change of pace compared to the usual Florida heat. Though the weather is only in the low 70s, I have been enjoying it very much as it is cold for me. This is probably laughable to any northerners who are used to real cold weather but I get extremely cold all the time. I could be sitting in my house during the summer and I would be cold. I think that during this time of year, the fall weather is so nice and enjoyable. I am very happy that all my college applications are done and I can just relax and enjoy my time now. I feel like I am a freshman in high school all over again as I only have Donna Klein work to focus on. Throughout our sophomore year, we had a rough year transitioning to virtual school and I had lots to focus on between dual enrollment classes. Junior year, I was studying for the ACTs nonstop so that was pretty time-consuming and senior year we obviously just had college applications. Thankfully, we are through that stage of time because it was pretty stressful and there was a lot to balance. Now, with winter break and Hanukkah approaching it is an enjoyable time of year. Ethan Week 3- “Looking at a Coyote”, by Javier Zamora

“ Looking at a Coyote ” by Javier Zamora is a symbolic poem about the relationship between an Illegal immigrant, such as Javier Zamora coming from Mexico, and a Coyote. The title, “ Looking at a Coyote ,” is very significant as it conveys the underlying message of the poem. More specifically, when looking at a Coyote, one observes an animal that is a vicious predator who, at the same time, is a scavenger, always moving and searching for food as well as a better life. The author is trying to illustrate a comparison between how many Americans view illegal immigrants, at first sight, today, and how they actually are. Many Americans view them as animals, predators, not humans. They view them as invasive species that must be gotten rid of. They feel that the illegals are coming to steal their resources and their jobs, similar to a Coyote stealing another animal’s food. Dan Week 1 - "Grief Calls Us to the Things of this World" by Sherman Alexie

 In his poem "Grief Calls Us to the Things of this World," Sherman Alexie describes a call with his mother through a hotel bathroom telephone and their shared conflicting emotions about Alexie's father that arise from the conversation. The tone of the poem shifts from a simple decision to call his father because "he's astounded by bathroom telephones" to a deep sense of self-reflection from both Alexie and his mother, asking themselves how they possibly could have forgotten that Alexie's father is dead.  While Sherman and his mother's initial reactions are to feel guilty for their forgetfulness, their mistakes are actually a result of their undying love for their father/husband.
