Lauren Hodes- Week 6- Amanda Gorman "Earthrise"

When reading the captivating poem entitled “Earthrise” written by Amanda Gorman, I was fascinated with the poem to say the least. Gorman’s use of vivid imagery and descriptive diction when describing the dire environmental problems really brought the situation in our world to life. The brilliant language such as its use in this stanza, “this riddled blue marble, this little true marvel” is awe inspiring. Gorman is describing the earth in an incredible manner by calling it a riddled blue marble. This language will make readers stop and think about just how precious our planet is. By growing the significance of the earth, people begin to care about it more and the greatest problem which is facing it: climate change. By beginning with describing the beauty that is the earth, Gorman draws the reader in and captivates all. Continuing with the theme, by saying “we witness its round green and brilliant blue, Which inspires us to ask deeply, wholly: What can we do?” Gorman shifts the focus to action and activism.

The entire purpose of this poem is to inspire change amongst readers and grow support for environmental awareness which leads to action both politically and socially. Utilizing imagery and descriptive language is the way in which Gorman accomplished this. Her language of “to make it your mission to conserve, to protect, to preserve that one and only home that is ours” presents the issue very clearly. Gorman is advocating for the earth and leading to change through her beautiful language.
